This very special home is a converted
11th Century monastery in the centre of a large, beautiful estate
near a medieval hilltop town. It is situated on high ground
with outstanding views of the surrounding undulating and totally
unspoilt Umbrian countryside. The interior of the villa is cool
and comfortable and, in keeping with its age, is heavily-beamed
and has many stone flagged floors. This is truly a much-loved
family home - the furniture is traditional Italian and there
are numerous oil paintings, an eclectic collection of antiques,
artefacts and some beautiful carved stonework. Unsurprisingly,
it has been featured in several magazines.
The drive to the villa through the estate passes the owner’s
stud farm and eventually comes to a great avenue of trees leading
to 3 hectares of immaculate gardens. These surround three sides
of the house and are on many levels. Lawned areas, some walled,
some edged with high lavender hedges are joined by stone archways
embraced by climbing roses. There are various outdoor terraces
for al fresco meals, including one overlooking the outstanding
swimming pool (14m x 13m) which, because of the sheer drop beyond
it, is well and heavily-ballustraded. There is also a pool house
with fridge, table, chairs, shower room, WC and changing room.
The perpendicular drop from the far side of the house is even
more dramatic and affords unbelievably beautiful views, especially
from several of the bedrooms (with low bars to protect children)
down over a wooded valley to a river, and then on up to high
hills beyond, one topped by a romantic little tower. Because
of the drops, although there are security measures in place,
some families may not consider the grounds to be safe for very
young children.
The area is dotted with little medieval hilltop villages and
you are very well situated to visit the better-known towns and
villages of both Umbria and Tuscany, including Florence and
Assisi. Rome is only 1 hr 15 mins away. There are 5 horses available
to ride (2 for children) on the estate, depending upon experience.
5 bicycles (full-sized) are also available to enjoy the 5 kms
of roads within the estate. |
