Lucca, Puccini's birthplace, is a beautiful city surrounded by 16th Century bastion walls, its interior a finely spun web of medieval houses, churches and squares, including a wonderful Roman amphitheatre. It also has excellent shops and restaurants. Other places within easy reach are: Pisa 30 mins, Florence 50 mins and within one and a half hours drive are Siena, San Gimignano, The Garfagnana, Bagni di Lucca, Pistoia and Barga. Forte dei Marmi on the Versilian coast is 35 mins away. There are numerous excellent recommended restaurants in the area and the some of the finest wines of Tuscany and Chianti are produced on the doorstep.
